Student Programs to Increase Knowledge and Experimentation
(SPIKE)

Igniting Minds with Education

Program Description

The Lumi Radix SPIKE (Student Programs to Increase Knowledge and Experimentation) for High School students and Advanced SPIKE for undergraduate students are programs that pair student candidates with experts for a gentle initiation into advanced topics.

Programs match students with experienced graduate students, faculty, and other professionals to share knowledge and learnings on various knowledge streams beyond students’ local resources. The programs are structured and executed so that the participating student can gather insight into the rewards and challenges associated with a particular field in which they would like to choose a future career. While a mentored deep dive into a topic helps students by facilitating informed decisions, the skills they learn during the SPIKE and SURGE programs lay a foundation for success in future endeavors.

Admission Qualifications

SPIKE Program: Aspirational students in High School are welcome to apply. Exceptional Middle school students, as demonstrated by their drive and achievements, may also apply to be considered

Advanced SPIKE Program: Student candidates must be enrolled or should have completed undergraduate college courses. Exceptional Senior High School students who have completed AP level or other relevant advanced courses may also apply.

The SPIKE and Advanced SPIKE programs are run on a rolling basis throughout the year based on the availability and commitment of individual mentors. One or two interactive sessions per week are generally encouraged between the mentor-mentee pairs. The best estimates for the format, tentative schedule, duration of the project, and time commitment requirements are posted for each individual mentorship project, along with the tentative time commitment required by a student candidate in preparation for course assignments.

Mentees must commit to the same level of commitment as their mentors while participating in any Lumi Radix Program. Student commitment should include sincere engagement, punctuality, and preparation with pre-read project assignments. Lumi Radix Mentorship Programs are meant to be privileges extended to nurture aspiring students, and the student’s effort alone will determine the benefits a student can derive from these programs.
