Students Undertaking Research and Graduate Experience
(SURGE)
Explore, Experience, Discover
Program Description
The Lumi Radix SURGE (Students Undertaking Research and Graduate Experience) and Advanced SURGE programs allow student candidates to gain practical hands-on experience and training in the subject area of their choice. Enrolled students will be able to work on real projects with their mentor for 4-8 weeks.
Students will also participate, engage, and contribute to project meetings. By working closely with a mentor, the students learn to apply their skills (gathered during the Lumi Radix SPIKE engagement or otherwise) to practical scenarios and plan, prepare, execute, and troubleshoot projects in real-life settings.
The SURGE/Advanced SURGE projects are structured to be rigorous training projects for students. Students must be meticulous (in project documentation) and professional in conduct as required by their project and institutional standards. Students must submit a project report and make a seminar presentation (if applicable) on completion. The SURGE program aims to allow aspiring students a glimpse into their chosen field’s professional life and prepare them for a stronger future.
Admission Qualifications
SURGE Program: Aspirational students in High School are welcome to apply. Exceptional Middle school students, as demonstrated by their drive and achievements, may also apply to be considered.
Advanced SURGE Program: Student candidates must be enrolled or should have completed undergraduate college courses. Exceptional Senior High School students who have completed AP level or other relevant advanced courses may also apply.
The SURGE program timelines are determined by host institution policies and requirements as well as availability of the mentor.
Once all the requirements are met and on-site project commences, students are required to commit full time in doing project specific learning activities. In general duration of SURGE projects is 4-8 weeks but can vary according to project requirements. The best estimates for the format, tentative schedule, duration of the project, and time commitment requirements are posted for each individual mentorship project, along with the tentative time commitment required by a student candidate in preparation for course assignments.
Mentees must commit to the same level of commitment as their mentors while participating in any Lumi Radix Program. Student commitment should include sincere engagement, punctuality, and preparation with pre-read project assignments. Lumi Radix Mentorship Programs are meant to be privileges extended to nurture aspiring students, and the student’s effort alone will determine the benefits a student can derive from these programs.
